San Francisco is a city of hills, fog and bay views. It's compact: you can cover the centre on foot and by cable car.

The classics

The Golden Gate Bridge is best walked or cycled. Alcatraz ferry tickets sell out weeks ahead. Then the cable cars and steep Lombard Street.

Neighbourhoods

The Mission has murals, taquerias and bars. Haight-Ashbury has hippie heritage and vintage shops. Chinatown is one of the oldest in America. North Beach has Italian cafés.

The bay and parks

The Ferry Building and its food market, the Embarcadero waterfront, Golden Gate Park with museums and gardens, and the view from Twin Peaks.
