Shanghai is a city of contrasts: the colonial façades of the Bund face Pudong's skyscrapers across the river, and a few blocks away are old lane neighbourhoods.
The Bund and Pudong
The Bund waterfront with its early-20th-century buildings, best in the evening when Pudong lights up. Across the river is the Shanghai Tower with its observation deck. For a view of both sides, try rooftop bars such as Condé Bar on the North Bund.
The old city
Yu Garden with its ponds and pavilions, the bazaar around it and teahouses.
Neighbourhoods
The former French Concession has plane trees, villas, coffee shops and boutiques — the best walk in the city. Tianzifang and Xintiandi have shikumen lanes full of restaurants. The West Bund has contemporary art museums along the river.
Food
Xiaolongbao soup dumplings for breakfast and crispy-bottomed shengjianbao as a snack. Places and events are in Places and Events.
