Istanbul sits on two continents, and you feel it best from the deck of a ferry. The city's historic areas are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Sultanahmet
Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapı Palace and the Basilica Cistern are close together — one packed day. A little further are the Grand Bazaar and the Spice Bazaar with spices and sweets.
Across the Golden Horn
Galata Tower, the steep streets of Karaköy with coffee shops and galleries, and pedestrian İstiklal Avenue. Balat and Fener have colourful houses and quiet streets on the Golden Horn.
The Asian side
Kadıköy and Moda have a market, bars, street food and local life without tourist crowds. Getting here by city ferry is the best short Bosphorus trip.
Food
Fish sandwiches by the Galata Bridge, meze and rakı in a meyhane, Turkish coffee and a simit on the go. Guides and events are in the Journal and Events.
